Every fall, nearly a million people attend ArtPrize, an international art competition and cultural festival that stands out as one of West Michigan's most recognizable events. While the event is best known for transforming Grand Rapids into a vibrant, open-air gallery, its impact extends far beyond the exhibits themselves. ArtPrize is also a powerful driver of the hospitality and tourism industries, generating economic activity and creating opportunities for businesses throughout the region.

This year, ArtPrize features more than 1,000 entries created by over 1,100 artists. Visitors attending ArtPrize do more than admire artwork— they book hotel rooms, dine at restaurants, shop, visit attractions and explore neighborhoods across the region. According to the City of Grand Rapids, 52% of ArtPrize attendees travel from outside Kent County. For many visitors, ArtPrize serves as an introduction to Grand Rapids and West Michigan, encouraging return visits and helping establish the region as a destination for arts, culture and entertainment. Last year alone, tourism associated with ArtPrize generated more than $82 million in total economic impact.

“ArtPrize is an incredible event for Grand Rapids and has a big impact on The Chop House, Real Seafood Company and Palio. It brings thousands of people into the city, creates an energy downtown that you can feel and gives us the opportunity to welcome both local guests and visitors who may be experiencing our restaurants for the first time,” Andrew Verburg of Mainstreet Ventures told us. “For Mainstreet Ventures Restaurant Group, events like ArtPrize are about more than just increased traffic, they help showcase Grand Rapids as a destination city and strengthen the restaurants we have in the community.”

The event also highlights the close relationship between tourism and hospitality. From front desk associates and restaurant servers to event professionals and attraction staff, hospitality workers play a critical role in creating welcoming and memorable experiences for visitors. Their work helps transform a trip centered around art into a broader experience that keeps guests engaged and connected to the community.

Ross Bartlett of AHC Hospitality noted, "ArtPrize is an incredible example of what makes Grand Rapids such a vibrant community. At the Amway Grand Plaza, we have the privilege of welcoming artists, visitors and residents who come together to experience our city in an entirely different way. Beyond the energy and connection it creates, ArtPrize brings thousands of people downtown, supporting our hotels, restaurants, small businesses and the broader local economy. It’s more than an arts event to us; it’s a celebration of our community and a meaningful economic driver for our region."

ArtPrize also demonstrates how events can support workforce development, the focus point of Explore Hospitality’s parent organization, West Michigan Works!. Large-scale events require collaboration across multiple sectors, including tourism, lodging, transportation, recreation and entertainment, event management and food and beverage. These experiences highlight a variety of career pathways while displaying the diverse opportunities available right here in the hospitality industry.

Beyond its economic impact, ArtPrize contributes to West Michigan's sense of place. Since its founding in 2009, the event has grown into a defining annual tradition for Grand Rapids and the surrounding region, drawing residents and visitors together through a shared celebration of creativity and culture. ArtPrize encourages exploration of local businesses, neighborhoods and attractions while showcasing the unique character of the community. Whether visitors are enjoying a meal downtown, staying at a local hotel or discovering a new neighborhood between exhibits, the event creates meaningful connections between people and places. In doing so, it strengthens community pride, enhances the visitor experience and reinforces West Michigan's reputation as a vibrant destination for arts, culture and hospitality.

As we look at the broader impact of ArtPrize, it's clear that its success is supported by a network of hospitality professionals, tourism partners, artists, volunteers and local businesses working together to create exceptional visitor experiences. Their efforts help strengthen the region's economy while highlighting everything West Michigan has to offer.

ArtPrize is more than an art competition. It's a celebration of creativity, community, tourism and hospitality that attracts visitors, supports local businesses and empowers the many professionals who help create memorable experiences in West Michigan.
